Taking Photos on the Back of the Bike

Today is Monday which means we take the afternoon off work. We head up the road to the north east of the Samui. I love being on the back on the motorbike and its a fantastic opportunity to see so many different things and seeing so many things equals millions of photos!

A great technique is to play around with is the cameras shutter speed when your on a moving vehicle. I'm using my Canon G7, I find the smaller camera easier and slightly safer to use when I'm taking photos on the back of the bike. My SLR would be good but as I have the choice I opt for the smaller compact camera. I take some photos using a slow shutter speed, the camera mode I'm using is shutter speed priority. I focus on a moving object, for example a bike coming towards us, follow the bike with the lens and shoot. Here are a few of the photos I took today.

Photo taken with shutter speed 1/160 F/stop 2.8 and not flash was used. The time was about 5pm so it was great soft light, the flash was not needed.

As we turned at a junction I was able to get this great close up shot. Again the time was about 5pm so the light was great and the flash was not needed. I used shutter speed 1/160 and F/stop 2.8

This is just a really fun abstract shot. Using a 15 sec shutter speed. It was about 8pm so it was very dark. Leaving the shutter open for so long picks up all avalible light giving you this wacky image. I would recomend you trying this, but a word of warning, leaving your shutter open for so long when your moving on a dusty road can leave your lens a little dirty!

Today's Tip: Play around with different shutter speeds and moving objects. Set your camera to shutter speed priority mode and set a slow shutter speed, (1/250 or faster). Poin the camera at the moving object and follow it with your lens, then shoot still following the object. Good luck and have fun!
